Why Backlinks are Important

A Major Ranking Factor

Google and other search engines (like Microsoft’s Bing) analyze the quantity and quality of the websites that are linking to content on your website. These incoming links to your site are a significant factor in determining where your website appears on the search engine results page.

When appropriately done, links are kind of like votes for your website. The more quality votes that your website receives, the better your chances are to rank well in the search engine results.

The Process of Link Building

Before even starting the process, your website must have high-quality content that others would find worthy of linking. Your content must be unique, and highly relevant to the site owners that you’re asking for a backlink.

The actual process of requesting links from other website owners can be tedious and can’t be effectively automated. For the best chances of success, it requires customized outreach – usually by email – to a website owner.

You’ll select website owners whose readers and subscribers could greatly benefit from content on your website. Your content should be closely related to content that has already been featured on your targeted website.

Even then, it is challenging to convince another website owner that your site is valuable enough for them to take the time to set up a link to your site. They, like you, are targeted with tons of unsolicited, irrelevant spam emails, and form requests. Even with targeted, relevant outreach, it can sometimes take hundreds of requests to website owners to get a link or two.

Not All Links are Created Equal

Just getting a bunch of random websites to link to your content isn’t going to help. It may damage how you appear in the search engine results.
There are four primary considerations to consider when getting people to link to your content:

1) Relevancy

The websites that link to your website must be relevant to the content on your website. As an example, if your website is about tropical fish, a link from a car repair blog won’t help. It may hurt your rankings.

2) Quality

If you have quality, relevant links, then you’re in a good position. The more of these links that you have coming into your website, the better. If you have more quality, relevant links than your competitors, it may help you to outrank them in the search results.

The links that you get must be a good fit for your website. If you get irrelevant links or pay for links, your link building efforts will likely hurt you rather than help you.

3) Quantity

If you have quality, relevant links then you’re in a good position. The more of these links that you have coming into your website, the better. If you have more quality, relevant links than your competitors, it may help you to outrank them in the search results.

4) Follow the Rules

While this is related to relevancy and quality, you must be sure to follow Google’s guidelines when obtaining links.

Spammy Websites & PBNs
If you get links from spammy websites or links from Private Blog Networks (PBNs), it can damage your rankings and may even lead to a penalty.

Getting Results from Backlink Building

Unless you’re in an industry with very little competition, seeing ranking improvements with backlink building will take time. Outreach is a time-intensive process, and even when the links start coming into your site, you may find Google slow to adjust rankings.
Other factors such as the age of your domain, the links you already have, and your on-page SEO factors all weigh in heavily on your search engine rankings.
That said, you must get these backlink “votes” to well on the search engine results pages.

Link Building Packages

Google’s guidelines concerning SEO follow a philosophy of “build it (high-quality content), and they (customers) will come”. Not true. You need to build great content and then effectively promote this high-quality content with effective outreach.
